RELIGIOSO was written in memory of the composer Dmitri Smirnov, who passed away in 2020. Dmitri was my first composition teacher, with whom I studied from 2014-15, and I consider his lessons profoundly formative. He held an enormous reverence for the composers he considered “great”; primarily Bach, Beethoven, Schoenberg, and Webern. It is in that spirit that I approached this piece.
